In 1972, I started to work as a Research Technician in the Physiology Dept of Cardiff University, doing tissue cultures to investigate the role of normal and transformed glycoproteins. From 1974 to 1984, I worked with Prof. M.H.T. Roberts fabricating various multi-barrelled micro-electrodes for iontophoresis and learning the delicate art of maintaining preparations under anaesthesia. In 1994, I moved to the Crunelli’s lab where I started to perform immuno-histochemistry and learned the use of a confocal microscope for calcium imaging in astrocytes. In particular, I was directly involved in the characterization of the intrinsic calcium oscillations elicited by astrocytes in the ventrobasal thalamus.

At present, while managing the basic requirements of the group I am mainly involved in the preparation and maintenance of the in vivo preparations used to study the mechanisms underlying sleep oscillations and absence seizures.
